I really enjoyed exploring the various Web Quests and creating an Inquiry Based Activity for potential use in my future classroom primarily because prior to this activity, I had never heard of or experienced these type of interactive learning tools. Students these days have so much more experience with technology not only inside the classroom but often at home, as well. Giving students an opportunity to learn while using the technology that they enjoy and are comfortable with is a win-win situation for both teachers and students.
I was particularly amazed by the 4th grade Web Quest on the Underground Railroad. http://questgarden.com/88/01/4/091112091643/index.htm . It somewhat reminded me of an observation of Steven Levy's classroom experience, "Voyage of Pilgrims", which I viewed in my Education 422 class last semester. Although the Levy classroom was truly a hands on experience in learning, the Underground Railroad Web Quest gives the students a similar role in which they have an active role researching their objective and then are able to collaborate and apply their learning based on an additional activity assigned by the teacher. I believe that any time students can have a "experience" with their learning, they are better equipped to remember that experience and apply it to future learning opportunities. The depth of the experience may depend on the age group and subject matter, but I think that even at a young age, if students are exposed to these type of activities, it will help them in the future when they are required to do more research/ inquiry based activities on their own.

Wiki, Wiki, Wiki...
Prior to Spring semester 2013 at UT, I had never heard of a "wiki". As mentioned before, when I was pursuing my bachelor's degree 16 years ago, we didn't even have e-mail... let alone wikis! But I realize, times have changed and so must I. That said, for the purpose of this assignment when I went out in search of a teacher wiki to evaluate, I found it a little bit difficult. Even with my own children being in school, this isn't a source of communication that their teachers have used. One of the best collections of teacher wiki sites that I could find was for Brighton Elementary School in Brighton, TN. The school itself has a Google site but individual classrooms have either a wiki or Google site.
In comparing two kindergarten teachers, Ms. Jamie (Google site) and Mrs. Melinda (wiki), I found I prefer the Google site best and can see using it more in my future classroom. The wiki site was informative, as well, but I like the layout of the Google site.

If the purpose of a wiki site is to allow it to be more collaborative, I did find a wiki in which a classroom wondered what 1000 would look like, therefore they collected 1000+ names. I thought this was a good interactive learning tool for students but I am curious on how it was implemented.

With this assignment, I was curious about my children's school and if any of the teachers at the school used wikis. I didn't find any but I did find a teacher who used a blog site to interact and collaborate with students. Again, I like this format and could see integrating it along with a classroom Google site into my future classroom.

Website Evaluation
I think the website evaluation process was helpful because it will make me more mindful about the resources that I may or may not want to use and introduce to my future students. For the purposes of the assignment, I didn't go "outside the box". Rather, I choose to evaluate a site I was already somewhat familiar with- Scholastic. Although I already thought the site was credible based on prior knowledge of Scholastic, the process allowed me to dig a little deeper into their background and mission of education (not just literary education). In the future, when I am going "outside of the box" and looking for web resources for my classroom and students, being aware of certain criteria and cross-checking references of such sites, will only help to build my credibility as a teacher and professional with my students and administrators.
On a side note, but going along with website evaluation, particularly for the purposes of credibility and intent in mind, it's amazing how much seemingly credible information is out there. I think a lot of the credibility comes from if the website "looks" legit. Well, I have to admit I was duped when it came to these adorable little miniature giraffes that appeared in a Direct TV commercial a few years ago. Of course, when I saw the commercial I believed it was a special effect and no such creature existed... until someone posted a link on my Facebook account to "Sokoblovsky Farms - Russia's Finest Purveyors of Miniature Lap Giraffes". I clicked on the link and found what appeared to be a legitimate farm in Russia that raised the miniature giraffes and even had a webcam you could view them! Although, I quickly realized it was a joke... they had me going for a moment!

Course Expectations
As I begin this class, I feel I have mediocre tech knowledge. I am amazed at how much it has changed since I was last in school pursuing my BA in 1997. Obviously, computers were around then but no one had lap tops, few had cell phones, and I think the closest thing to instant messaging was via a pager. My degree was in English and all my papers were done on a Brother word processor. Any research I did was at the library, there was no internet. I don't feel like I'm that old but when I consider all that plus the fact that now since I have returned, everyone has an e-mail account, most have lap taps or access to them, many have smart phones and now there are things such as wikis and Blogs! Crazy!
I currently have a PC (could you imagine me lugging in my Brother word processor to class and a backpack full of encyclopedias, ha!). I also have an Apple Mac-Pro. Although, I'm excited about using it and know it will be beneficial to my classroom, I have been reluctant in making the switch. Anyhow, I look forward to embracing this technology, especially from an educational standpoint as a teacher and even a parent.
This semester, I hope to become more familiar with various technology resources and the ability to maneuver them in an effort to engage and communicate with my future students, as well as their parents/ caregivers and the learning community.
